Meet Nikolai Pasichnik

What is your first music memory?

  • My first musical memory would be hearing my mum play the piano, we always had a piano in the living room and I would hear all kinds of works from Brahms to Beethoven.

When did you first learn an instrument?

  • I first began playing piano around 7 years old but swapped to violin soon after that and have been playing ever since.

What drove you to practice and play when you first started out?

  • I wasn't always good with my practice when I was young, but having a good teacher definitely helped inspire me to practice. I would say I really got into the instrument in my late teens when I had a better understanding of what I wanted to do with my life and understood that I wanted to pursue music.

Are you still excited about developing your craft?

  • Absolutely, I don't think a lifetime is enough to study with an instrument. There are always things to develop, techniques to master, and music to discover.

When did you start teaching?

  • I taught off and on during my studies at university but started teaching professionally in April 2022.

What is your advice for people learning music?

  • My advice would be to truly explore your instrument or musical craft. Listen to music that inspires but also challenges your understanding of music. Play things that are outside of your comfort zone and above all else foster your musical curiosity, that way your practice will never stagnate and you will find things to work towards.
