Meet Zylah Vivace

What is your first music memory?

My first music memory is of a group music class my mum took me to as a toddler. We would march around singing songs, banging on drums and if we were lucky, trying out a xylophone or a marimba.

When did you first learn an instrument?

When I was 4 my grandad began teaching me ukulele - I wanted to play guitar but my hands were too small! I moved on to guitar around a year later.

What drove you to practice and play when you first started out?

Playing with others was my main reason to practice. I played in groups at school as well as with teachers, friends and family members who inspired me to play and improve.

Are you still excited about developing your craft?

Yes! Always. I don’t think I’ll ever be quite satisfied with where I am because there’s always something new and exciting I want to learn.

What is your advice for people learning music?

My advice would be to allow yourself to experiment, make mistakes, try new things. It is easy to worry that we sound bad or aren’t good enough yet but I promise that you judge yourself more harshly than anyone else does!
