Meet Kenzie Willson

What is your first music memory?

My first music memory took place back in 2014 when my Mum took me to see Annie the Musical Live at The Civic Theatre. Not long after the show, I decided that I wanted to be like ‘Annie' and be able to sing too. So I practiced the song ’Tomorrow’ (from Annie) and performed it on a national talent quest called Mish Mash that aired on TV a few months later.

When did you first learn an instrument?

Not long after singing on Mish Mash in 2014, I enrolled in singing lessons. This is when I first properly learnt an instrument (my voice).

What drove you to practice and play when you first started out?

Not only did I want to be like the girls I saw on the stage when I watched Annie, but I had a real passion for singing and performance that I wanted to pursue.

Are you still excited about developing your craft?

Absolutely. I discover new things about my voice nearly every week, and that just comes from experimentation and drive to learn more about my voice.

When did you first start teaching?

In 2020 I started teaching ukulele and singing. Additionally, I trained local primary school choirs for the last 4 years.

What is your advice for people learning music?

Experimenting is best way to learn. Try new things and step outside of your comfort zone. Try singing a song you have never sung before, or nailing the run your have never been able to achieve, one day, it will become your new comfort zone, and that is how you can expand your skillset.
